Question 1

How does the connection with DUO work?

Accepted Answer

The candidate identifies themselves with DigiD, after which Otentica retrieves the diploma data from the DUO diploma register via a secure connection. This is the only way to verify with certainty whether someone has actually obtained a specific diploma.

Question 2

Which diplomas can be verified?

Accepted Answer

All Dutch diplomas registered with DUO can be verified: VMBO, HAVO, VWO, MBO (all levels), HBO (Bachelor and Master) and WO (Bachelor, Master and PhD). Some recognized foreign diplomas that have been evaluated in the Netherlands can also be included.

Question 3

Why is diploma verification via DUO better than a copy?

Accepted Answer

A diploma copy can be forged - there are even websites that sell fake diplomas. By directly consulting the DUO register, you know for certain that the information is authentic. This is the gold standard for diploma verification in the Netherlands.

Question 4

How long are diplomas registered with DUO?

Accepted Answer

DUO registers all diplomas obtained from 1996 for HBO and WO, and from 2007 for MBO. Older diplomas are not always in the register. For these cases, Otentica offers alternative verification options.

Question 5

What if a diploma is not in the DUO register?

Accepted Answer

If a diploma is not in the DUO register, this may mean that the diploma was obtained before registration began, that it is a foreign diploma, or that the diploma does not exist. Otentica reports this clearly and offers alternative verification options where possible.

Question 6

Can foreign diplomas also be verified?

Accepted Answer

For foreign diplomas, Otentica offers additional verification options. This can be via credential evaluation services or direct verification with foreign educational institutions. Contact us for the options.

Question 7

How long does a diploma check take?

Accepted Answer

The diploma check via DUO is real-time: as soon as the candidate has identified themselves with DigiD, the results are available within seconds in your Otentica dashboard. There is no waiting time.

Question 8

Is the diploma check GDPR compliant?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the diploma check is fully GDPR compliant. The candidate gives explicit consent via DigiD for sharing diploma data. Data is processed encrypted and you determine the retention periods according to your privacy policy.
